Happiness is not something that can be forced upon someone, nor is it definite. For different people, happiness could mean different things. Having a good circle of friends, a reliable family, landing one’s dream job, all of these can be a source of happiness. But rather than focusing on one aspect in your life, if you commit yourself to overall wellness, it could result in long term contentment, which is why adding certain habits to your daily routine can be beneficial.

Smile more (but mean it)

A smile could light up anyone’s day. It is a ray of sunshine for many having a rough time. Scientifically, smiling is also associated with the release of a ‘feel good’ hormone called dopamine, which is said to make you happier and helps you cope with stress.

Get sufficient sleep

Additionally, a good sleep is also vital for emotional well-being. Most adults need atleast 7-8 hours of sleep every night. A well rested body therefore equates to a healthy functioning of the body, keeping the mind and body at peace.

Eat mood-boosting foods

Not only do certain foods have a positive impact on your physical health, but they can work wonders on boosting your mood too.

Many studies have associated nutrition with mental health and emphasized on the role of eating healthy foods for raising spirits. Consuming nutrient-dense foods is said to improve overall brain functions and certain mood disorders too.

Exercise regularly

Although true happiness is not humanly possible, you can reduce your stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression, if any, by regular exercise or physical activity. Daily workout routines keep you in good shape and also tend to your mental health, boosting your self-esteem and keeping you happy.

Decluttering can help

Decluttering is the act of removing mess or clutter from a place. It has to do with organizing your space and tidying up a specific area such as a closet or a drawer.

Reflect and acknowledge the unhappy moments

Happiness does not come the easy way. Only when you learn to overcome challenges, know the taste of failure and learn from your mistakes, is it then that you find true happiness. This is why you must reflect on your journey, acknowledge your unhappy moments and then see how far along you have come.

Take some time off of your phone

In a modern world, our phones have become our best friends. It helps us gain knowledge, keeps us posted about new trends and opportunities and also connects us with our loved ones. But taking time off of your screens is something that is necessary for your mental well-being. Social media can be a joyful place, but it is also full of negativity. Learn to unplug, turn off your electronics and sometimes tread into nature. Read, meditate or take a walk.

Have a plan and set your goals

Never move forward without a plan. Know what you want in life. You may find yourself struggling for a while, but with a clear objective in mind, you’re bound to achieve greatness.
